Main factors determining the sound quality of PA Loudspeakers

2023 01/04

We listen to audio equipment, and of course pay attention to its sound quality. The diaphragm material of loudspeaker is very important, which plays a vital role in the sound quality of loudspeaker. Different diaphragm materials determine the sound quality orientation of horn loudspeaker, or in order to make the sound quality of loudspeakers satisfactory, we have made great efforts to choose a new material. The selection and application of a new material often means a change to the loudspeaker box. In the early years, the electric speakers basically used pulp diaphragm, and at that time, the horn speaker was called paper cone horn speakers. In the 1990s, polypropylene diaphragm (PP basin) appeared; The subsequent appearance of bulletproof cloth diaphragm (Kevlar fiber) is refreshing. The different timbre of Xuanda loudspeakers is closely related to the diaphragm material used.

The understanding of voice is even more subtle. We can distinguish between strangers and acquaintances, and even "when we don't see them, we can hear them". Just by the sound of footsteps, pushing the door and coughing, you can accurately identify the arrival of your acquaintances. The auditory impression corresponding to this distinction is called timbre. All kinds of sounds have their own characteristics, and sound has an invisible and intangible mystery. There are all kinds of sounds in the world, and there are many kinds of musical instruments in different countries. Naturally, their timbres are different. Timbre is also related to the composition of sound. The sound component is simple, Z is pure tone, and there are few pure tones in nature. If the voice is thin, it is not music. If the voice is composed of multiple components, the timbre is relatively full. All kinds of musical instruments (except electronic instruments first) do not emit pure sound with single frequency and single vibration. The sound of an instrument is generally composed of a harmonic tone with an integral multiple of the pitch. Almost all sounds in nature are complex sounds, including harmonics and noises with different amplitudes, thus forming different timbres.

The reason why there are different voice colors is that each voice component is different. It will have many harmonics and noises; These harmonics and noises may or may not have certain rules. In terms of time structure, its shape is different, and the relationship between its diaphragm and time is also different. This combination of changes is infinite. And a good loudspeaker is to reproduce the timbre characteristics of the music itself without distortion. Loudspeaker speakers are required to reproduce sound without distortion and with real sound, but people also require good listening. The compromise between the two forms a variety of speaker speakers.

The playback sound quality of loudspeaker mainly depends on the diaphragm material

As far as the commonly used and common electric loudspeaker is concerned, its objective test index mainly depends on its structure and geometric shape. And its sound quality depends on the loudspeaker diaphragm materials, the types of diaphragm materials and its physical properties. For example; For B&W 801, the low frequency unit diaphragm was originally made of aluminum alloy. Although the test results were good, the subjective sound quality evaluation was not so ideal, so the paper frame diaphragm mixed with 10% Kevlar fiber was used after Z.

According to the research, the sound quality of loudspeaker diaphragm depends on three indexes of diaphragm material: elasticity of diaphragm material (using elastic modulus E), density (p) and proper internal damping. That is to say, it is hoped that its elastic modulus E is high, its density p is small, and it also has appropriate internal damping. In this way, the loudspeaker has fast propagation speed, fast rise, and proper internal damping to damp off unnecessary clutter. The vibration stops and drops quickly, and the sound is clean and soft. However, no one is perfect. There is no absolutely ideal diaphragm material in the world. For example, steel alloy diaphragm has high elastic modulus, low density, fast response to vibration and strong explosive force to sound. However, the damping inside the metal is small, so it is difficult to stop the vibration quickly, and the sound is not clean. Compared with the pulp materials, the sound is soft and the sound rises slowly, but the decline speed is fast and the strength is not very strong. At the same time, it is very difficult to meet the requirements of materials with large E/p and sufficient internal damping. In recent years, with the development of material technology, many new materials have emerged. For example, in addition to traditional paper pulp, glass fiber, Kevlar fiber (bulletproof cloth), some conical vibration membranes also use TPX, HD-A, HD-1 and other composite materials, making great progress in performance.

Therefore, with different diaphragm materials, there are speakers with different sound quality. In other words, if there are 10000 different types of diaphragm, there will be 10000 speakers with different characteristics.
