Broadcast PA Loudspeaker placement skills

2022 07/15

The PA Loudspeaker is a professional audio equipment. Its characteristics do not carry out any modification or rendering on the playback of the sound, and faithfully restore the audio signal. So what should you pay attention to when placing speakers? The following is a small series to introduce the skills of monitor horn speaker placement.
Horn
1. Symmetry is a good thing

As long as you are listening to speakers indoors, the shape of the room will affect the sound you hear. For example, when listening to two channels, depending on the position of the speakers, different room shapes will greatly affect the ratio of the sound from the left to the right. So the situation is that there is a symmetrical room, because the sound reflected back from the left and right will be equal, and the balance will be achieved. It is also better to place two pairs of speakers on the front wall than in the left and right corners.

2. Place horns along short walls

The time for a sound wave to be reflected from the "near wall" to the ear is shorter than that of the "far wall" reflection (in ms) (of course, it is longer than the sound emitted directly from the speaker). And when the sound travels farther, its reflection intensity (sound size) will decrease proportionally. The figure below shows two different distances (the echo in figure A will be weaker). So placing the speaker on a short wall will make the sound more accurate.

3. Make your horns level with your ears

The height of the horn should be placed so that the tweeter is level with the ear, so that the on axis of the horn keeps the shortest distance from the ear. Sitting in front of the horn, the timbre we hear changes slightly as the head moves back and forth, left and right, but this effect is amplified as the ear moves away from the speaker horn positive axis. So it is necessary to keep the ear and the tweeter level in order to have a more consistent sound. If your speaker stand/console/desk cannot effectively control the height of the speaker, you can use a height-adjustable speaker stand.

4. Avoid sound reflected from nearby hard surfaces

Acoustically, a "hard surface" can reflect sound, just as a mirror reflects light. Windows, brick or plaster walls, mirrors and any non-absorbing, non-diffuse reflecting surface are examples of hard surfaces. When the sound coming directly from the speaker overlaps with the reflected back, the sound is altered - the term is comb filtering "combfiltering" and this should be avoided. So now I will introduce a way to see the reflection of sound waves, which is to borrow a mirror that can reflect light! As long as the mirror is placed on a flat surface, such as the opposite wall or table, if you can see the mirror image of the speaker on the seat, it means that the surface should be placed with sound-absorbing material.

5. Adjust the horn to make the "correct" sound

Play some classic "trial music", which is a familiar tone, and you remember the effect of this music in a regular recording studio to adjust your speakers. Here's how: Try moving the speakers until the sound is close to what the reference track should look like. If you feel that the bass is too much, you can move the speaker away from the wall or corner; if the speaker is equipped with EQ (high-mid frequency increase/decrease), it can also be used for adjustment. In short, it is to adjust your speakers to the most reference, although it will not be perfect, but at least ensure that your mix does not sound too bad on other systems.Wall Mount Speaker Jpg
