Conical loudspeaker, flat loudspeaker and dome PA loudspeaker are all direct radiation loudspeakers, which radiate sound waves directly to the surrounding air medium from the diaphragm. The sound wave generated by the diaphragm in the direct radiation loudspeaker horn quickly diverges to the surrounding space after leaving the diaphragm. The amplitude of sound pressure decreases rapidly with the propagation of sound wave. Therefore, high sound pressure cannot be obtained near the diaphragm of the loudspeaker, which is the main reason for the low efficiency of direct radiation loudspeaker. To improve the efficiency of horn speakers, we must try to slow down the attenuation speed of sound waves after leaving the diaphragm. The horn type loudspeaker is designed and made according to this principle.

The horn type loudspeaker works differently from the above three loudspeakers, and its diaphragm radiates sound waves to the surrounding space through a horn. Our mouth is like a driver. Two closed hands play the role of a horn. The horn speakers can be divided into round, square and rectangular according to the shape of the horn mouth. The circular and square horn mouth speakers have the same horizontal and vertical directivity. The rectangular horn loudspeaker has sharp directivity in the plane parallel to the long side and wide directivity in the plane parallel to the short side.


The advantage of horn type loudspeaker is that its impedance characteristics do not change with frequency, and it has good medium and high frequency characteristics and high electro acoustic conversion efficiency; The horn type loudspeaker has a sharp directivity in the whole operating frequency range, and is less affected by frequency changes. The disadvantage of horn type loudspeaker is that the working frequency band is relatively narrow, and the frequency distortion at the low frequency end is large. Due to the above advantages, horn type high frequency loudspeaker is still widely used in Hi Fi sound system.
